1. Civil Ceremony at San Francisco City Hall
A civil ceremony is the simplest and most affordable way to get married at San Francisco City Hall.
These ceremonies are performed through the San Francisco County Clerk and are especially popular with couples planning intimate weddings and elopements.

How Many Guests Can Attend a Civil Ceremony?
Civil ceremonies currently allow up to six invited guests. Photographers and children count toward the guest limit. The couple getting married does not count toward the six invited guests.
This is important to consider when planning your wedding. For example, if you want your photographer present along with several family members, decide in advance who will actually attend the ceremony.
Additional friends and family can always meet you afterward for photographs, lunch, dinner, or another celebration.
Is a Civil Ceremony Private?
No. San Francisco City Hall remains a functioning public building during weekday civil ceremonies.
Other couples, visitors, employees, tourists, and wedding photographers may be in the building at the same time.
Your ceremony location may also be assigned by City Hall rather than privately selected by you.

One-hour wedding rentals are generally offered Monday through Friday.
Popular dates can book well in advance, so couples should reserve early whenever possible.

Can You Get Married on the Grand Staircase?
Yes. However, simply booking a civil ceremony does not reserve the Grand Staircase.
This is one of the most important differences between a civil ceremony and a private City Hall rental.
Couples having a regular civil ceremony may still be able to take wedding portraits on the staircase when it is available, but other visitors and wedding parties may also be using the area.
The one-hour Mayor's Balcony and Fourth Floor packages also do not privately reserve the staircase.
If your dream is to actually exchange vows on the Grand Staircase with the area reserved for your wedding, the two-hour Rotunda package or an eligible evening rental is generally the option to consider.
4. Full Evening San Francisco City Hall Wedding
San Francisco City Hall can also become your complete wedding venue.
For larger celebrations, couples can host their ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and reception inside the building.
